After the fall of the Third Reich, German surrender, Dad was placed on a troop ship for return stateside. Last minute he got orders to a different ship, a ’’ temporary transport company’’ required an Officer to command it. He watched the first ship depart. While still in sight, just outside the harbor, it hit a German mine, that the sweepers had missed, and sank.
No life lost, as it sank within view of rescuers; but Dad’s footlocker trunks containing 2 M1 carbines, a field officer grade Walther, 2 Lugers, & several selected Mausers, etc. sank with it.

Evidently. I posted as it was a real scew-up but look at ours. McCain vs Fitzgerald battle didn't go well either. Yea, minesweepers have non metal hulls.
