CAMPUS CARRY REVIVED as SB 1581/HB 3639

    From NRA ILA.

Campus Carry Language Added to Another Higher Ed Bill -
This Time Texas Senate Passes Measure!

Yesterday, state Senator Jeff Wentworth (R-San Antonio) successfully amended language allowing Concealed Handgun Licensees to protect themselves on public college and university campuses onto Senate Bill 1581, a measure authored by state Senator Steve Ogden (R-Bryan) that reforms finance methods for higher education. The Wentworth amendment was adopted by a 21 to 10 vote and then the underlying bill passed by a 19 to 12 vote. This bill now moves to the House for its consideration with the Wentworth language included. Since the House companion bill, House Bill 3639 by state Representative Jim Pitts (R-Waxahachie), already occupies a slot on the House Calendar, it is expected that SB 1581 could be expedited through the House Appropriations Committee and substituted on the House floor for HB 3639.

It is critical that you contact your state Representative and urge him or her to support the campus personal protection provisions of SB 1581/HB 3639. If you are a Concealed Handgun Licensee - even if you never intend to carry in a campus setting - you should be alarmed at hysterical nature of opponents' arguments against this proposal and their attempts to portray fellow license holders as unlawful and irresponsible criminals! All gun owners and CHLs need to weigh in on this fundamental debate about the right of an individual - especially one who has passed a background check and completed a training course - to protect himself or herself. Contact information for state Representative can be found here.

#TX residents, call Speaker Strauss (512) 463-1000 to keep #guns on campus amendment OFF #HB 3639
    Woods new plan here:
Guns on campus passes the Texas Senate

Pitts and Aycock (authors of the companion House Bill) sure could use some more calls too

    1. Speaker Joe Straus: (512) 463-1000
    2. Rep. Jim Pitts: (512) 463-0516
    3. Rep. Jimmie Aycock: (512) 463-0684
    4. Sen. Steve Ogden: (512) 463-0105
    5. Your State Representative: Who Represents Me--Home

Please call and/or fax your Representative and ask them to oppose any attempt to remove Senator Wentworth's campus-carry provisions from SB1581 (the HB3639 companion). Please do this ASAP and keep the calls/Faxes/E-mails going!!

Most staffers answering phones are getting flooded with anti-gun calls (some out of State people I'm sure); be sure they understand FOR guns on campus.

    House Appropriations committee today:
In this morning's committee meeting, Aycock (R-54) and Darby (R-72) voted in favor of Diane Patrick’s (Democrat)amendment (against campus carry). so her amendment failed 15-5

    Then
SB 1581 passed out of Appropriations committee as is, (out of committee) 17-3.

The bill now goes to the Calendars Committee, chaired by Todd Hunter (R-32). He sounds very positive about SB 1581 making it to floor.

It’s very likely that points of order like Patrick’s will arise, once SB 1581 reaches the floor. This tactic helps delay bills until time runs out on the legislative session. Considering this, the most important person to call now is Speaker Straus. Despite overwhelming support for campus carry among House members, how Straus rules on points of order will determine whether campus carry reaches the governor’s desk.

    Speaker Joe Straus: (512) 463-1000

    Then
Please call these five Representatives, and tell them THANK YOU for supporting the campus carry provision of SB 1581 in committee:

    Rep. Jim Pitts - (512) 463-0516 - jim.pitts@house.state.tx.us
    Rep. Myra Crownover - (512) 463-0582 - myra.crownover@house.state.tx.us
    Rep. Dee Margo - (512) 463-0728 - dee.margo@house.state.tx.us
    Rep. Geanie Morrison - (512) 463-0456 - geanie.morrison@house.state.tx.us
    Rep. Mark Shelton - (512) 463-0608 - mark.shelton@house.state.tx.us

    Also
Please call these two Representatives, and POLITELY tell them how DISAPPOINTED you are that they chose to vote against the campus carry provision of SB 1581 in committee:

    Rep. Jimmie Don Aycock - (512) 463-0684 - jimmie.aycock@house.state.tx.us
    Rep. Drew Darby - (512) 463-0331 - district72.darby@house.state.tx.us

SB 1581 still has to pass two votes in the full House of Representatives, so it’s important to let these legislators know how you feel.

*When I called Aycock's (Republican over the district where the Luby's massacre occurred) office, he said 200 calls [from out of State Democrats who were tweeted by Bradys group?] opposed it, and that's why he voted against it in committee. (He thought/thinks they are "his constituents")

Pretty fucked up that out of state anti-gunners are ruining our chances to legally defend ourselves. I used to think Collin Goddard was a mislead young man, now I think he's scum.
