Taking a few guys dove hunting this weekend and borrowed a Mossberg Model 835 Ulti-Mag from my buddy. It has an ULT-MAG choke in it right now. Is this going to be impossible for a newb to hit anything with? I don't want to damage the barrel threads by shooting with no choke, and I don't want to spend the money on a choke tube for a gun that isn't mine. Would rather just let the guy use my gun and I'll sit back and soak it all in.

Don't know of anyone who's ever gotten a warning from the game warden.

    Yeah they dont give warnings...

Seriously just put a plug in it, so you can only put 2 shells in and one in the tube, and you'll be fine, All it is is a spacer. Heck I've made one out of a stick before...

I agree. Game wardens usually watch what folks are doing before they approach you. I used to hunt on private land with a few buddies and we were never approached by the GW but the first time I hunted on public land here comes a fella dressed up in hunting gear casually shooting the bull with us(whatcha hunting with? how many birds you get? etc...) after a friendly chat he then introduces himself as a Game Warden and presents us his badge and ask to see if there is a plug in one of our shotguns and checked our hunting licenses.

He was a very cool guy but I'm sure if our gear license or bag limit were off, he'd probably change his tone real quick.

Most gw I have met (actually about 3) are nice. As long as you follow the rules they are cool. If you comp an attitude good luck. I have heard horror stories

Last year as my dad and I were driving off we heard 8 rounds come from what sounded like 1 person as it was perfectly timed. As we were driving off a gw was flying down the road toward the guys.

Dove are migratory so they come under Federal laws so make sure you have duck stamps, too. I wouldn't fool with the gun being unplugged. I never hunted in Texas but in Oklahoma and Missouri, the GW can confiscate your guns and even your car/truck for game violations. I don't think an unplugged gun would warrant that kind of bust but be aware the GW has wide ranging authority.

I got to know the father of one of my former students. The Dad is a Texas GW. He told me stories that woud curl your hair. Honestly, I wouldn't fool with them.

Thanks, fellas. Sounds like the best way to handle this is just to get a plug. Will be a nice way to say thanks to my buddy for lending us the gun anyways.

I'm still on the fence about pulling the turkey choke or leaving it in. Some had said lead shot will not damage the barrel threads. I guess I thought that would be a problem.

I think you only need a duck stamp for migratory waterfowl

Things sure have changed since I hunted but I found this info on Dove hunting and general license requirements. There is another stamp that is required to hunt Dove in September.

In addition to a hunting license, all wing shooters will need to purchase a game bird stamp. To hunt dove or teal in September, a Migratory Game Bird Stamp ($7) is required. Duck hunters also need to purchase a Federal Duck Stamp and receive HIP (Harvest Information Program) certification. HIP certification involves a brief survey of previous year’s hunting success and is conducted at the time licenses are purchased. Certification will be printed on the license. Lifetime license holders must also be HIP-certified and purchase the Federal Duck Stamp to hunt migratory birds. All other state stamp endorsements are included with a lifetime license.

Be safe & be sure! Here's where I got the information:

Got a plug, and decided to shoot with the turkey choke. Guess my buddy's a crack shot--he didn't have any problems dropping birds. We had a great hunt. Thx all.
