Another question, she is 50 pounds, and some cans say that she should get 2 1/2 cans.
Another website says, 3/4 can per 8 pounds. That would be like 4 cans!
That's ridiculous.
When my bird dogs were sick or at a trial away from home I mixed Alpo in with dry food to get them to eat heartily. I also used beef bouillon on occasion. Can't recommend Alpo now, their parent company Nestle-Purina has gone ass over teakettle for Climate Change.
Over the years, interest surrounding raw dog food and raw dog food recipes has grown. Here are some of the best ingredients to include in your dog's raw diet.
Many years ago I made dog food for Dr Debakey it was a combination of boiled chicken rice & yogurt. This could be possible better & cheaper then canned. I know it smells better!
Good quality can food of your choice.
My dogs like this and its reasonable
My dogs are 70ish and eat 1x a day 2cups dry 1/4 can wet mixed.
On occasion they get a fast day usually 3-4x a yr.
Most dogs are over fed.
As for your current situation.
If I was in your spot Id go buy a large ass bag o rice boil that shiat up feed my effected dog 2 cups rice and about 1/2 can wet food.
An example for homemade, since I don't know a good canned.
I boil 15lbs+/- boneless chicken breasts and pull out the meat. Add some goat milk to the chicken water/stock, cook 4lbs of brown rice, 5lbs of mixed veggis(frozen), 1lb+ chicken hearts, 1lb+ chicken gizzards, 1lb+ beef liver, 3 dozen eggs, with ground eggshells for calcium (20tsp?).
This mixture will make me about 35-40lbs total, split between two cooks per week. I will also swap out the chicken occasionally for fish or beef and add additional oils to the mix.
@ZX9RCAM If this is just a temporary thing and he likes the current dry food he's on, You could just add some warm water and let it set for a little bit to soften the food up.
The dogs we have now get dry food, but previous dogs had wet food for a long time. One thing I noticed was that even though the food with chunks of meat looked better to us, the dogs always preferred the softer stuff that came out of the can in one giant disgusting piece. The Costco wet food is very good. And if nothing else, buy food in the cans with a pull tab to make your life simpler.
