What? So if you are employed by a felon you can't have guns?

Not as a condition of employment. I remember Sen. Teddy Kennedy's bodyguards checking their guns at the capitol and causing a stir, as he was a convicted felon. They seemed to get by former D.C. Mayor Marion Berry and his past of serving time in a federal pen.

    SNOOP DOGG'S BODYGUARDS IN TROUBLE;
    WHAT ABOUT TED KENNEDY'S SECURITY?

    For Immediate Release:

BELLEVUE, WA - If the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and
Explosives is investigating rapper Snoop Dogg's armed bodyguards for
violation of federal weapons laws, why isn't the agency also snooping into
    Sen. Ted Kennedy's armed security?

That's the question being asked today by the Citizens Committee for the
Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA). Reports say ATF agents may present a
case against the rapper's bodyguards because it is a violation of federal
law for a felon to possess guns or ammunition, or for anyone knowingly
employed by a felon to carry a firearm or ammunition. Dogg, whose real name
is Calvin Broadus, was convicted on a serious drug charge in 1990.

"And that brings us around to Sen. Kennedy," said CCRKBA Executive Director
Joe Waldron. "On July 25, 1969, he pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of a
crime, the fatal car crash at Chappaquiddick. That guilty plea under federal
gun law not only disqualifies Kennedy from owning a firearm, it also
prevents him from having an armed bodyguard.

"Kennedy has employed armed bodyguards in the past," Waldron said. "Some
years ago, Kennedy bodyguard Chuck Stein was arrested at the Russell Senate
Office Building with a handgun, two submachine guns and 146 rounds of
ammunition. In all fairness, it would seem that ATF agents might also
investigate whether Kennedy continues to have armed bodyguards, unless, of
course, they have gone to the Doggs.

"Snoop Dogg and Ted Kennedy not only have armed bodyguards in common,"
Waldron observed, "they both have criminal convictions that disqualify them
from owning firearms. That probably explains why Sen. Kennedy doesn't want
the rest of us to own a gun.

"But the potential that Kennedy may be violating a federal gun statute, for
which he likely voted, is a serious question," Waldron insisted. "ATF agents
should verify whether Kennedy has armed security and take appropriate
action. Sen. Kennedy has long been an advocate of equal justice for all, and
now he can prove it by disclosing to the ATF if he has armed bodyguards. It
would be a sad day, indeed, if a millionaire rap artist was subjected to a
different standard than a millionaire politician."

With more than 650,000 members and supporters nationwide, the Citizens
Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms is one of the nation's premier
gun rights organizations. As a non-profit organization, the Citizens
Committee is dedicated to preserving firearms freedoms through active
lobbying of elected officials and facilitating grass-roots organization of
gun rights activists in local communities throughout the United States.

    Here is the law:

    (h) It shall be unlawful for any individual, who to that
individual's knowledge and while being employed for any person described
in any paragraph of subsection (g) of this section, in the course of
    such employment--
    (1) to receive, possess, or transport any firearm or ammunition
in or affecting interstate or foreign commerce; or
    (2) to receive any firearm or ammunition which has been shipped
or transported in interstate or foreign commerce.

Ted Kennedy was not a felon, AFAIK. It was a misdemeanor.

State employees are not employees of the Sheriff, they are employees of the State, so this law would not apply. We have plenty of Felons employed as LEOs in Texas, one was a Sheriff at one time, not sure if any are now.

Umm correct me if I'm wrong on the bodyguard thing but wouldn't this only matter if they were free lance body guards accepting money directly from the client/felon? If they work for a separate security company then they don't actually work for the client/felon because they aren't excepting money or directly employed by the client/felon.

On topic, who the hell would elect a convicted felon for sheriff?

Obviously CCRKBA refuses to accept the FACT that select senators are very, VERY important people and therefore must be allowed reside above the law.

Speaking of important people, I hear where USAG Holder testified that he is doing a very good job. <puke>

I would think that any felon cannot carry a firearm, no matter what job he happens to hold. Look at the case of Duane Chapman (if you don't recognize the name, try Dog the bounty hunter).

In 1976, Chapman and another gang member were buying marijuana in Texas, and Chapman was waiting in the car while the other gang member shot and killed the drug dealer. Because of Texas law at that time, Chapman was charged with first-degree murder and sentenced to five years in prison. He served eighteen months at Texas State Penitentiary in Huntsville, TX. Because of this felony conviction, Chapman is not allowed to carry a firearm.
