    My spent brass is getting dented. I've seen slow motion videos and noticed that spikes tactical rifles slap the brass on the deflector before they fly out. Other rifles don't seem to have it that bad.

    My finish on the deflector has even worn out from the brass contact, and I can see shiny metal.

    Here are the marks on the brass. I know that there are a number of things that can be causing this, but how can I narrow it out?

    That is normal in an AR-15 with a good strong extractor spring. The two spots on the mouth are normal also from the locking lugs.

    You should see the brass that comes out of my FAL.

    Haha, you should see the brass being flung out from a Sig 556. Within 200 rounds, the finish just behind the ejection port gets chipped off on that rifle.

    If you're really worried, you could stick a strip of velcro, the soft side, on the deflector.
