I'm looking for memorabilia from the long defunct Fort Hood, TX Advanced Marksmanship Unit. Looking for patches, caps, or green cloth shooting jackets. Let me know what you have, and how much you need for it.
I have nothing from them, but spent many thousands of hours shooting at the Ft Hood Smallbore Indoor Range they ran. As good as I got, they made me look bad.
For those that don't know. On many Posts, especially the larger ones, they had an Advanced Marksmanship Unit that would run a smallbore indoor range. On week days they would teach soldiers the finer points of shooting. Rifle on one end, pistol on the other. 2 squads. You learned one in the morning, the other in the afternoon. On the weekend they had NRA aproved classes and matches for the dependant kids that wanted to learn to shoot, ages 10 and up. If they were not training, you could go in and shoot, they would give you 50 rounds free each day. If they had open lanes, you could also take your own ammo and shoot longer. Super nice soldiers that knew their shit and were willing to teach and share.
The Unit has long since been gone from Ft Hood. The building, was right there on Headquarters Ave right by the Post Chappel and the Post Headquarters building. The only thing left now is the Chappel. Some idiot even renamed the street.
I miss that place. I learned an apprecation for what one could do with a rifle and pistol there. And still love my Rimfires. Most are sighted at 100 yards and get shot past 200.
Make the first shot count, you may not get a second......
OP; not trying to derail your thread. I was just 10 the first time I went there. Shot there until Inno longer qualified for a military ID card. They made an impression. I still use what they tought me. I am 65 now.
