    A majority of the time someone is keeping an overly large space from the car ahead of them.
    Easy to whip in front of them, of course, with the blinker on.

    I think you are referring to what is often known as a “safe following distance”.

    Leaving space gives you room to get around a stalled vehicle if needed or prevent yourself from being pushed in to it should you get rear ended by someone attempting to jump in to an open space behind you, or doing anything else they shouldn’t be.

    I see so many of these signs just on the side of the road that I don't trust them any more. In Dallas, I think they think if you move the sign 3 feet to the right people can't see them and know the lane is not really closed... Unless it is.
