... while mine is the type who'll fill up when the needle nears 1/2. We'll be about to make a trip across town (well, to be fair that's 50 miles in Houston) and she asks if we need to stop for gas when the needle is at 3/4.

This is so true. I believe the low fuel light on my wife’s car will be the first bulb to burn out. Every time I get in her car that light is on. Every time we discuss taking her car she says “Well, I need gas”. I think it has become a personal challenge to see how far she can go with that light on.
