One of my friends lived in one side of a duplex. His sister lived on the other side. They shared a single phone line. If you picked up the phone and heard someone talking you hung up. When the other person was off the phone they would bang on the wall to signal you can pick up the line. My buddy picks up and hears his sister so he hangs up. Waits for a while. Picks up, she's still talking. Waits for a while. Picks up, she's still talking. He says "shit, hurry up" and hangs up. Few minutes later she bangs on the wall. My buddy picks up and can hear his sister.

Buddy: what was taking you so long?
Sister: I was talking to mom!
Buddy: ****, did she hear my say shit?
Sister: She's still on the phone!!
Buddy slams the phone down. Sisters starts banging on the wall.
