PIKEVILLE - A popular annual holiday event had a very different look this morning, and city officials are blaming it on a simple spelling error.

“Breakfast with Santa” has been a Pikeville tradition for many years, as local children come to the Pike County Courthouse for a meet and greet with the jolly old elf. But this morning, instead of Kris Kringle, hundreds of kids were entertained on the front lawn by a man in a devil costume.

“When we called the talent agency to book Santa, they sent us Satan instead,” says Damian Pierce, the events manager for the City of Pikeville. “Because ‘Santa’ and ‘Satan’ are spelled so similarly, this evidently caused some confusion with the talent agency,” adds Pierce. “So they sent us Satan instead of Santa, which is of course completely different than what we requested.”

The event was still a huge success, with kids and parents alike taking pictures, enjoying pancakes and getting hugs from Satan. “We considered canceling the event, but we didn't want to turn away the families that came here this morning to celebrate the holidays,” says Pierce. "Turns out the kids loved it, and I had several parents tell me it was a refreshing change of pace from the tired old Santa event we've been doing for years. It was actually such a big hit that we're planning on bringing Satan back again next year!”
