My boss took a vacation cruise there 2 years back. She loved it and especially the penguins since you can walk up to them.
If penguins are your thing, there are lots to be seen down there without cruising to Antarctica. You can find them nesting in the islands of the Beagle and Magellan Channels and the smaller islands off Cape Horn. The jumping off points are Punta Arenas, Chile, and Ushuaia, Argentina. Been down that way a lot myself.

Awesome, I looked at applying to Mcmurdo, but the pay didn't seem worth it, and I knew I would go stir crazy on a ship.

Yuge upside of being single, but don't have to much fun in NZ.

    Thanks for the pictures

very cool. My brother was stationed in Christchurch in the 70's. He was in the Navy, working with Operation Deep Freeze. No idea what that was all about, but I have my T-shirt still. lol

I had a Senior Chief threaten me with McMurdo Station for the longest time.

Keep the pictures coming, it'll be interesting.

Well at least you're going in the summer time. Still too cold for my taste. I'll let you have all of that you want.

Of course the pictures so far aren't bad. They haven't turned white yet.

And about that intermittent internet connection, you should talk to the IT folks about fixing that.:)

I provide IT services and support on our research vessel, JOIDES Resolution. Everything from Server/Network Administrator to end user support.

) I've been experiencing some interruptions in service already and we are just a couple days out of port.

I assume you guys are using some satellite service for internet?

I did find it ironic that the IT support guy is having internet connectivity issues. ;-)

    Looks amazing!

How long are you at sea before you refuel/take on additional supplies?

Expeditions usually are 8 to 9 weeks so we have enough provisions to stay out that long and then some and then they'll take on fresh provisions at the next port call.

The JR can hold about 1 million gallons of fuel but it is rare that they fill it up completely.

The worst part is I didn't even notice until one of my users informed me. I was busy with a server. :)

The weather has been a bit rough slowing down our progress. We are sailing at a snails pace (7 knots) if snails could sail. It probably doesn't help that we have a 200+ foot sail amidship. Not good for folks who get motion sickness.
