Ok, went to my LGS, do some trading, happened to see, what appeared to be this really nice knife.

    The label

    Explorer Solingen\Fox

    #30-397

    XXTRA-SHARP Stainless Steel Blade

India Sambar Stag Handle w/Brass Gaurd

    4 1/8" Blade - 8" Overall

    Gutman Cutlery, Mt. Vernon NY

Appears this blade was delivered in Feb 1995.

I cannot find anything about that particular model anywhere, other models yes, this one seems to be non-existant.

Thanks Robb, already found that thread, I really don't think it is the "Edge". Could be wrong though, I've found some of the bowie knives in the $300 to $400 range.

Some guy seems to be trying to sell one for $300, but not succeeding. Gutman apparently went out of business in '97.

Solingen steels have a long standing reputation for quality, but there have been many, many knockoffs from China trying that have illegally used the name. Martha Steward and Emeril Lagasse both ran into problems with their cutlery lines doing that.

What sets off alarms to me is the brass guard. That's usually the mark of a cheap knife - e.g., Pakistani made - and would reduce the value a lot.

Found a gentleman online located in Sugarland,Tx. It appears to be a copy of the Puma Hunters Pal. He believes that the knife was most likely made in the Puma factory. Per this gentlemans opinion it is a high quality knife in the $150 or higher range. The gunstore was asking $160 got it for $140. I'm satisfied.

    That's completely inappropriate.

It's not a comment or a response; it's an insult.

What I input was correct and I can happily refer anyone who disputes it to one of the knife forums for confirmation.

I'll remain a gentleman and leave it at that.

I don't like brass either but it has nothing to do with whether a knife is "cheap".

I'm always suspicious of a knife that only advertises "Stainless Steel"... If they were actually using a good stainless steel, then they would be bragging about it.

Hand crafted in Germany & Solingen isn't bragging? From what I gather it is supposed to be some of the best, maybe I misunderstood.
