Heading out to big bend - What would you take?

I just went down there in March. From what I saw, I think people are overly paranoid about what might be happening in Big Bend NP. Take your gun, yes. One of the gas stations down near the border may be closed, because all of the RV'ers leave; it's too hot; they head north. Also, gas is about $5 per gallon in the park.
