Welcome to TGT, Uncle. Be sure to make a list of the guns you're referring to. They should start interesting conversations around here, these folks know their stuff .

Welcome and yes, sorry for your loss. Lost my Dad many years ago so now there is rarely sorrow, just positive memories, but it does take time.

Your wording suggests you are a 1st time gun owner, correct?

I appreciate the kind words. It was a very interesting adventure getting his (now mine) collection of about 120 rifles/shotguns to Texas from NY. I'm still working on getting his pistols down here, but luckily I found a great FFL in NY to help. I really only had a few pistols myself for home/personal protection so my safe is not quite large enough for the new additions;-)

He collected mainly old Savages (Model 99s and Model 1899s) and Remington Classic 700s, which are all new in the box without the bolt even in them. Also, a lot of strange calibers that I never heard of plus old ammo in unopened boxes. I'd like to keep some, but honestly I don't have the room to keep them all.

Welcome and good luck with your newfound hobby! One aspect I hope you might enjoy is also learning the History that goes along with the firearms and how events of the day affected their development- politics, resources, War, economy, contracts, etc. Sounds like you will become an expert- there sure are some very knowledgeable people lurking around here.

I hope to learn a lot about guns and owning guns in Texas. My father just passed and he was a collector of rifles. Hopefully, I can get a good understanding of why he collected the guns he did and learn how to best judge if I should sell, keep or trade his collection. Thank you all!

FIRST & critically important, don’t sell anything right now.

Get to know some of the folks here, who could give specific advIce FIRST.

I have personally seen 2 cases of premature recipient selling of extremely valuable weapons for pittances.

Next, please tell us your general location.

Also, Ii wouldn‘t fire anything until you have an understanding of values.

Does anyone in your Family have firearms experience?

    Welcome to TGT !

Welcome to the forum and my condolences to your loss of your father. Have you ever considered keeping his collection and passing on to your family?

    Welcome.
Absolutely take the time to see what you have before you do anything with them. Depending on caliber and configuration, sounds like you have some very collectable guns. Sounds like your Dad knew what he was doing. Mine has been gone 40 years now. I still miss him.
