Call the airline Sterling. Usually it is locked in a airline approved case in your checked baggage.

Last time I flew, the ammo had to be stored in a seperate lockable container also. It has been a while, so check on that also.

If your original case has paperwork or a marking on it stating 'TSA approved' or similar, it should be good.

I fly with my plastic Kimber case all of the time. As long as it's solid and locks you are good.

I fly all the time with mine, ammo can be in the same box as weapon but must be in origional packaging get you some tsa locks they will check your gun when you board, check it and send you on your way and most of the time you will have to claim your weapon when you land at the airlines terminal desk

I'm late now, but Cabelas has the locking metal pistol boxes that attach with a cable and slide under your car seat. (about $35) That's what I would use. I just flew down from KC today. I may have passed you in the airport.

Just hire a private flight and be done with it!
Then you can carry anything the PILOT says is ok. :-)

    • The firearm must be in a hard-sided container.
    • The container must be locked. A locked container is defined as one that completely secures the firearm from being accessed. Cases that can be pulled open with little effort cannot be brought aboard the aircraft.
    • Travelers must securely pack any ammunition in fiber (such as cardboard), wood or metal boxes or other packaging that is specifically designed to carry small amounts of ammunition.
    • Travelers may not use firearm magazines/clips for packing ammunition unless they completely and securely enclose the ammunition (e.g., by securely covering the exposed portions of the magazine or by securely placing the magazine in a pouch, holder, holster or lanyard).
    • Ammunition may be carried in the same hard-sided case as the firearm, as long as it follows packing guidelines described above.
    TSA: Traveling with Special Items

You do NOT need some special TSA approved case.
You do NOT need to use TSA approved locks. (and IMO you should not)
You do NOT have to put AMMO in a separate container

If you have hard sided luggage, you can even put the gun loose in the suitcase and lock it with a NON-TSA lock.

If no hardsided luggage, what about a lockable ammo can?

    Helotes!
Thanks Rum Runner, you saved me from having to post all that info! Plus you included the link to the source, you rock, brother!

I wish people would distinguish between their opinions and facts when responding to such questions. Much like the thread about copying people's CHLs and getting receipts for F2F gun sales, what some folks do and what the law requires can be significantly different.

It is OK to give suggestions, but please don't confuse others by acting like they're the law!
