Yep, I keep a plate carrier with Level IV plates next to the bed. Doubtful I'll ever need it, but you know what they say about needing and not having. ;)

I would certainly defend myself with my SA 1911 with glow-on.com night sights, a .45 acp is all I would need for the job, I have a 9mm carbine with the same night sights as I think most home invasions happen in the dark of the night and surely a dark concealed position would help in case the intruder is inside

we have a .357 revolver with spare speed loader in five different locations in house and garage, with Winc defense loads.
we do not have to think about how different guns will shoot if a time arises.

    true story:
we live on a short dead end street in a very good neighborhood.
only four houses on a couple of acres each.
on July the 5th, a kid about 25 years old knocks at the door at 06:45. my wife answers. i am not home.
the kid asks if 'so and so' lives here. my wife said no and to go away.
he took a step closer to the front door. wife opens door and takes a step back so he can see gun in hand beside her leg. (not pointed at him)
the kid stumbles back off porch and says sorry and leaves.
wifes runs for pencil and pad for license plate number, but the kid leaves rapidly.
we have a 150' of concrete driveway he had to back out of.
wife calls county sheriff. MO for perp is, no one home--break in.
it has happened in our division serveral times this year.
this is the third time in four years that a stranger has appeared at our house. Twice we showed we were armed.
---just because you live in a nice neighborhood does not mean you are safe-----

    My votes;

Long guns - Shotgun with 18" barrel loaded with bird shot and/or 00. I tested shooting birdshot thru sheetrock and it is devastating but doesn't go through as many walls as 00.

Pistols - the largest caliber you can shoot the most number times the most accurately.

I got a 12 gauge pump with 00 buckshot and a tactical LED light. Just the sound of a shotgun is going to get your blood pumping. Adding the light in your eyes with the sound and your checking your pants. I like the light and sound option first, but if all else fails the 00 is going to make it's point. In my opinion if you come into my house without being welcomed and with bad intentions you don't deserve to get out.
