    Out here by the lake!
My BIL died recently. He was retired out of the Army after 24 years. At the time of his death he was living in Commiepornia. Parents live in Texas & both his kids lived else were.

The wife & in-laws decided against traveling to Commiepornis pretty much due the the expense. He was cremated & his ashes divided. Burial in Commiepornia National Cemetery with the full military honor guard as expected.

Ashes returned to his parents were laid to rest in family plot. Not sure of the method of shipping his ashes back to Texas, but my guess it was a common carrier.

I did not attend the services as they were out of town & work does not recognize a BIL as immediate family & give the travel time needed to go. A cousin was more then willing to arrange an honor guard for the services in Texas which the parents did not want. Having a military service is not hard to do as there are plenty of VFW across the country that are happy to provide this.

My own father had a military internment @ the National Cemetery back home. The honor guard were in fact volunteers from the local VFW. The military brotherhood is a very strong bond until death. I asked the honor guard if I could be in the line up to fire the salute to my father. My wish was honored & it helped keep me composed at my dad's service.

Big, big thumbs up and thank you to the Patriot Guard riders. Well done guys! As the father of a son who is currently serving this country I was saddened to see that it was acceptable to send the remains of devoted Marine home via USPS so that it would arrive with the mountains of junk mail that typically fill the mail box.
