HOUSTON—A man was killed and his family members beaten after three suspects barged into a north Houston home Saturday afternoon, police said.
Investigators said one of the suspects pretended to be a census worker to gain entry into the house, located in the 400 block of Truman.
Family members said the victim’s son opened the door for the suspects, believing they were with the census.
Larry Johnson Jr., the nephew of the victim, said the suspects tied up and beat his cousin and aunt after barging into to the home.
Johnson said his uncle, Reginald "Pete" Haynes, walked in on the crime and was ambushed.
"They tied him up and stabbed him and tried to submerge him in water," Johnson said.
Haynes later died at the hospital.
Family members said the men ransacked the house for two hours.
"They were looking for money and my aunt gave them everything that they had and it wasn’t enough for them," Johnson said.
Neighbor Randell Harmon said he even watched the suspects leave after the crime and had no idea what had happened.
"I saw three gentlemen walk out and I didn’t think anything of it," Harmon said. "They didn’t look at me. They got in the truck and they left."
The incident left people in the community fearful about who might come knocking at their door.
"They’ve taken something precious from us," Johnson said. "They really have."
Neighbors said census-takers started working their street weeks ago.
According to HPD, the suspect who claimed to be a census worker showed no ID badge. Investigators said they don’t have a good description of any of the suspects.

    I bet your right.
The left always says the right will be the violent ones but when you watch the news it is always the liberal/socialist left that commits the crimes.

When I saw the story on the news Monday morning, I was kinda in shock. I personally knew the victim and his wife from back when i worked at a retail pharmacy... I filled their rx's for years. They were very nice people. When people ask me why I carry my ol' .45 around my house cocked and locked, I remind them of stories like this. I'd rather have it on me, and not need it, than need it and not have it on me.

We no longer even answer our doorbell. If somebody is coming to see me they need to call first.
When the doorbell rings, I just move a little closer to some hardware and wait.

    Sad times we live in.

Yep. I never answer my door. Mostly, I just don't feel obligated to see people just because they knocked on my door, but there's an element of mistrust there as well. I always have the shotgun handy, along with my CCW, various and sundry swords, knives, arnis sticks, jo sticks, etc.

I printed the article for my mom. I never answer my door either, but she runs to the door anytime it rings. Kind of annoying. She's there all by herself all day long and I worry about her. Part of the reason why I got a dog, but she's more likely to try and play with an intruder than bite them, lol...

Think about this......I imagine it was not random.

Most activity like this is not. They usually have an idea or assumption of what they know or think is there. I am very careful about who knows what i have in my home i.e. guns. My girlfriend didn't even know until I knew her for about three months. Many times it's not who you tell, but who else they may mention it to, albeit innocently, and then who they mention it to, and so on and such, until it hits the wrong ears.

I never answer the door either. No one that I know ever shows up w/o a phone call nor do I do that to them.

i agree it was a planned out crime!! and my friends are as nut as i, and when i go to their house/ vice versa it goes something like this. "phone call- hey im outside i'll be right up so open the door"!! and I still answer the door with my .45!!

I always answer the door with my Glock 30. I rather feel stupid and laugh about it later, then be found dead.

Although, I always run to the UPS truck...hahah

I am a country boy, and when I first signed on I thought you people around Houston were crazy-talking about carrying backup guns--and then I started looking at the Houston paper website---carry on.
