I went to Academy down the street this afternoon hoping to get a Heritage Rough Rider .22lr for $99 as had been advertised and discussed in the good deal gun section.

Alas, they were sold out of those promo guns.

Being in the "F*** it, I want it now" mind set, I picked one up anyways for $199. I justified the extra cost by purchasing the one with both the .22lr and .22 Magnum cylinders.

Got it all cleaned and oiled up. Ready for the range tomorrow.

I took it out the range this AM. Just used the loading ramp to load one at a time.

I may be seeing things wrong, and I forgot to take pictures, but it appears that some of the rounds are keyholing. Tried two different types of ammo with similar results.

Is it possible for this to happen at 7 yards with a brand new gun?

Is there anyway to confirm this?

Was it just the target tearing funny?

Or should there be distinct, round, .22 caliber holes?

    Likely just tearing the target.
Revolver velocities are quite a bit lower than semi auto pistol.
Much lower than rifle. Try a stiff backer board or splatter type target.

I was using a Hornady shoot-n-see type target stuck to a range target. The range target wasn't stapled as tight as I would like.

Guess I will have to clean her up and take her for another spin this week.

Ammo? .22 LR or .22 Mag? Which cylinder?

I can't remember if I ever tried to shoot .22 Long Rifle out of my .22 Mag cylinder.

Don't know if that is even possible, but the reverse cannot be done (shoot a .22 Mag round out of the .22 LR cylinder).

    Just speculating!

    Be well.

Strictly shot LR today. No Magnum to be found at Academy when I purchased it.

CCI Standard Velocity Tac 22 and Federal Auto-Match.

Gonna try again sometime this week with a flat as possible target and see if that is the issue.

What he's asking - are you using the 22LR cylinder or the 22mag cylinder?
As far as I know it is the .22lr, but I will double check.

That didn't even occur to me to check. I just assumed the one installed when shipped would be the long rifle.

Going to check in about 10 minutes and will report back my findings.

    Gunz are icky.
Not unusual for 22lr to act that way fired from a .22mag barrel.
Try 22WMR and report back. Betcha it shoots much better.
Also try some standard velocity 22lr or even some 22short.
IMO this is because the barrel is rifled for .223 22WMR bullet diameter. 22lr is .222. The LR doesn't seal in the bore as well. Hence the funky accuracy.
