At Ft Polk we trained with M-14 and bayonets during Basic Training. By the time I got to Vietnam the M-16 was issued to us. The wood and steel of the M-14 would have been my choice, but the Army didn't work that way.

Not true. You can definitely clear a jam in an M4 against someone's skull.
