I belong to Grenwood Gun Club. http://greenwoodgunclub.org/ The cost is far cheaper then what I would spend in a year at public ranges. I think the biggest concideration is the saftey factor. Seems that the public ranges have more & more riff-raff at them. I judge most ranges by the number of bullet holes found in the roof & walls of the shooting benches. The club offers lots of different disiplines of shooting. It's also nice to go & have the place all to yourself.
Yes there are several private ranges around Houston. There is Greenwood in Brazoria, PSC down near Alvin, Impact Zone is west of town near Monaville, and Bayou Rifles which has two ranges in the area. The benefits to joining a private range depend on the individual range. The main reasons I belong to one are cost, longer hours, can draw from the holster, can rapid fire, private shooting bays, and the most important reason is I am not surrounded by unsafe morons on the firing line like when I made my only two trips to a public range.
