OK, time for a Marine Corps comment . . .
    In this post http://www.texasguntalk.com/forums/...tate/13028-whats-your-home-defense-gun-3.html
BurkGlocker made a comment about “a pair of deadly hands and a Marine mind-set of 'kill or be killed'” that reminded me of something.

The Marine commanders realize that you simply can’t train a bunch of hot-blooded young American boys to kill and then get all bitchy if they turn on each other if there isn’t an enemy around to let them loose on. So they tolerate fighting, or did in the late '70's / early '80's.

To contrast the Marine Corps’ attitude towards fighting, in the Air Force, if you were fighting in the Enlisted Club, they kicked you out of the service – discharged you with a less-than honorable discharge. I know this because at one time when I was in the Corps I was dating a female (of course!) Air Force Security Policeman – tiny little thing, with blond hair down to her ass, only about 5' 2” but mean as hell and very wild – but that's another story. A few other stories, none of them G rated.

Anyway, in the Marines, if you were fighting in the Enlisted Club, they kicked you out – of the Club – for that night! If you got kicked out of the Club three times in a month, they kicked you out of the Club for a month.

Less-than honorable discharge vs. don't come back tonight. That is one hell of a difference in perspective.

Oh, I'm sure that would rate a Navy service ribbon, due to how infrequently it occurred. Don't forget, the Marine Corps is a department of the Navy - the MEN'S department.

Yer close - they SERVE the men's department. We needed someone with the strength to move mountains, and the mentality to not realize they were doing it in a swamp fulla gators. ;)

    Men's Department?

Sorry, but there's probably more to the story of your ex-girlfriend that you know. I was a commander in the Air Force (on G-series orders) and we don't kick out Airmen just for fighting in the club. Usually, if they don't have a file on them already, it's NJP (Art 15) at the most. By your description of her, she already had a track record with her commander and that last incident was the icing on the cake.

And ask a few Marines who have benefitted from the services of an AC-130 or an A-10 and you’ll find they are much less likely to joke about the Air Force…

As for being the "Men's Department" of the Navy, doesn't that equate to this?

I live in an Air Force city, and live about a mile from the base. Most of the pingers hang out at the corner store, and a lot of them are loud, disrespectful and just dont have any decency. One night I piped up and asked them to quite down while an older lady was walking into the store. One kid asked me if I had a problem, I said, "Son, if you only knew..." He stood up and started to bow out his chest, and I asked him if he wanted to dance. He started walking towards me. Then I gave him a thought... "I dont know how bad I'm going to hurt you, but I know its going to take all of your friends and a prybar to pull this Marine off of your ass..." He sat back down...

I was the only Jarhead in a house full of swabbies, so i caught alot of flack. Dad and both brothers were all Navy, so we ragged on each other alot. Dad would tell me about how great the Navy was, and I'd tell him, "Well, thanks for the ride... to the fight." To this day we still rag on each other, especially when we're at the range. He is a pretty good shot, but I am better, and he knows it. He had my Savage rifle with the big old scope mounted to it shooting at pumpkins at 300 yards. I picked up his Swiss Mauser, iron sights... Remember BRASS? Yeah... To this day is still run the acronym through my mind anytime I squeeze off a round. But all I could see was pumpkin guts lying around.

Good humor. All I am going to say is that Marines didn't have to yell "Make a hole". The squids simply saw me and my Marines coming and "got the hell out of the way". Sort of like when "a job" wasn't getting done by the Army, and the Marines were called in to complete the mission. "Stand aside Dogfaces, America's Spartans have arrived. Consider the mission accomplished".

    Yours truly,

    Former Company Commander

Actually, she was an SP, and told me that airmen were getting kicked out for fighting. She didn't get kicked. The ones that got the boot may well have had other incidents on record. But still, an Article 15 vs "don't come back in the club tonight" is a big difference.

The Air Force has never been a one mistake Air Force. The Airman in question likely had a long paper trail on her to begin with, a lot of Security Forces trainees get in trouble during Tech School for underage drinking or providing alcohol to minors. Maybe she had some history with something like that, but it's only speculation.

An airman in a bar leans over to the guy next to him and says, "Wanna hear a MARINE joke?"
The guy next to him replies, "Well, before you tell that joke, you should know something. I'm 6' tall, 200 lbs, and I'm a MARINE. The guy sitting next to me is 6'2" tall, weighs 225, and he's a MARINE. The fella next to him is 6'5" tall, weighs 250, and he's also a MARINE. Now, you still wanna tell that joke?"
The Airman says, "Nah, I don't want to have to explain it three times."

I still remember the look on my kids' faces when I yelled 'gangway' or use some sort of lingo around them.

My favorite Marine joke, but a variant of it...Mine doesnt use the Army, but some people of the sandy nature...

An army 2Lt. is taking his platoon on patrol when his scouts come running back and say
"Sir, there's a Marine standing in the way of the road".
The Lt. scoffs and sends a fire team to go investigate and remove the Marine.
They approach the Marine and he begins to head for a small ridge
on the side of the road and motions for them to follow.
As the rest of the platoon advances and takes cover they hear yelling and screaming.
The Marine emerges a couple minutes later and dusts himself off
and again stands in the middle of the road.
The Lt. curses and calls for a squad to remove the Devil Dog.
He again heads down to s small ridge and they follow.
Once again there is blood-curdling screaming and weeping.
And AGAIN the Marine emerges and dusts himself off.
Bewildered and pissed off, the Lt. sends all but his platoon Sgt. down and says
"Eliminate the motherfu**er". They run towards him and again follow him to the ridge.
The screaming begins again and suddenly a specialist comes running up,
bloody, his cammies all mangled. The Lt. is in shock and says
"What the hell is going on out there soldier?"
Gasping for breath the soldier replies,
"Its a trick sir!! There's two of em."

I was also an SP when I was enlisted, so I know the BS that flows through that career field. I wouldn't trust what a sky cop tells me unless 1) it is an official statement or 2) someone I know really well and trust. And trust me, when I was enlisted I saw numerous fights in the club that didn't even result in an LOR. As I (and Clockwork) said, there has to be more history behind a person before they get booted. Trust me, I sent my fair share permanently out the gate and know the processes intimately; it isn't something that happens easily and with happenstance...

Hmmmm. Trust you after you just got through telling me not to trust a sky cop, which you were? Something sounds fishy here . . . .

Is that a self portrait M2? Looks more like those girly officers in the Chair Force than a Sailor in the World's Greatest Navy. Besides, the Air Force's best years were when they were the Army back in WWII.

I was also an Air Force officer, so I don't expect you'll listen to anything I say...

Just kidding, of course! And don't get my wrong, I have always enjoyed working with the Marines. As a matter of fact, I have a mounted photograph of former Commandant Gen James Jones that he signed as my going-away gift when I left SHAPE (he was the SACEUR at the time). And I still work with the Marines, I am a contractor with a joint organization here in San Antonio, and my task lead is a retired Marine (as is my company's boss here). That just means I have to remember to talk slowly...

Again, just kidding, being Air Force with numerous joint tours I have learned to dish out as much crap as gets tossed my way!

    Cheers! M2
