I just took my CHL class and have a few questions that I'm sure you guys get asked all the time. So if you get a spare second and would like to help a guy out I would sure appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

To begin I understand the 30.06 sign and verbal rules. So with that in mind can I carry in a mall or Wal-mart / target / grocery store? (If a sign is not present) Does anyone know if wal-mart or target does post signs?

I saw someone write about carrying to the movies. Is that okay?

Is there any place other then school, hospital, religious site, or government building that it is illegal? Does this include post offices?
    Thanks Again.

I really debated on how to answer this....but look - you're going to come on the internet and ask a question whose answer is in print in the booklet you should have been given in the class you just completed - and you're asking it with the effect of an incorrect answer being a possible FELONY conviction???
I can't answer about wal-mart or targets in YOUR area - around here, I've never seen one w/a 30.06 sign. Governmental buildings are not necessarily "off-limits" to CC - there are certain instances where they MIGHT be - but you need to read/study up on that and be VERY familiar w/it. I keep a copy of the book at my computer, and another in my vehicles for that very reason. Better safe than sorry - and no, I'm not gonna stake my personal future on what some "internet expert" might say.

I am not chastising you, but if your class did not cover that I would demand my money back. Those items are the PURPOSE of the class.

SO to answer you; You should have received a little handbook from DPS in your class. If not, look here Texas Department of Public Safety - Courtesy, Service, Protection

AS far as "can I carry in a mall or Wal-mart / target / grocery store?" You can carry anwhere that you did not receive 30.06 notice, or anyplace not off limits in Penal Code 46.03 or 46.035. (look in the handbook)

For this question; "Is there any place other then school, hospital, religious site, or government building that it is illegal?" Government buildings are not off limits. Hospitals, churches, etc and only off limits if you are given 30.06 notice. Yes, there are many other places off limits. (see the handbook under penal code 46.03 and 46.035 )

I have to ask if they covered the definition of premises as it applies to these places?

"Does this include post offices?" Post offices are not off limits under Texas Law. There is some discussion if they are off limits to CHL holders under Federal Law. You should google that for some interesting reading.

I appreciate the help. I regret to say the booklet I received in my class was outdated and the only places that were covered where what I mentioned. In no way shape or form am I living and dieing by the responses I get on this forum. Rather I was looking for guidance on a subject that is not concrete. I am not holding anyone responsible for my actions and choices to carry or not. I would hope if anyone considers carrying a gun they would at least understand that. Is it my fault the class was not the best? I don't think so. Once again I appreciate the help and advice. I have not received my license yet and will do more research on where I am allowed to carry before it arrives.

Well, yes and no - if nothing else, you're giving others a GOOD reason to understand that when they look at classes and instructors, they need to be guided by more than just a price! If they're cutting corners, handing out outdated info, etc., then you are NOT getting what you paid for - and in that respect, it is your fault (just as it would be mine if the roles were reversed) - because ultimately, you're the one that chose him. We all PRESUME that the level of instruction would be essentially the same - but as your experience shows, it's not. Frankly, I'd encourage you to disclose the name of the instructor....but then again, maybe not. Because if you do, and the state sees it and opens an investigation and declares his certification invalid, they CAN go back and invalidate the licenses of those he trained, as I understand it.
But I'd definitely tell anyone asking to stay FAR away from him!!!!

They can only do that for classes that do not meet the time allocation or there is clear evidence that topics were not covered at all.

I am undergoing a "busy" time at work this month, but next month I am going to put together for forum presentation a "short cut" version of CHL legalities.

Based on what I have seen, one does not exist.

Yeah...but given the questions his student asked here.....DID he cover the topics? Not a shot at the OP - but obviously, some of the info provided was inadequate, IMO. Then again - it WAS covered - even if wrong, so I guess they'd be off the hook.

In that case, name the instructor - others need to know who to avoid!

FWIW, I had questions after my class too. Like Texas Redneck, I keep the book provided in my truck. I spent 4 months reading it during my lunch breaks, so I felt pretty confident when my license arrived. It's a lot to learn in a brief time, and can be a bit overwhelming and confusing, but it will come to you in time. Just read it over and over.

"Is there any place other then school, hospital, religious site, or government building that it is illegal?"

This too is covered in the book. Bars, or anywhere that receives 51% of it's revenue from on premises consumption of alcohol .

This might help: DoubleActionCHL.com - Cheat Sheet

Now, keep in mind this is, as it says, a "cheat sheet." It's a guide and nothing more. I tried to squeeze as much useful information onto one printable page as possible.

I have to agree with the other guys. If you just took the class and you're unclear on some of the most basic issues, either your instructor did you a tremendous disservice, or you just weren't paying attention. The good news is these topics have been discussed to death. Just a suggestion: Use the search feature before asking your question. The basics have been beaten like the proverbial belly-up horse. You'll also save yourself the grief that some guys will give you for asking questions you should already know the answers to.

    Good luck.

Section 46.035 (b) (1) I can only assume that this is your problem with my post?

Feeling judgmental again today, are we?
You'd be wrong on both counts.

    This was the question to which you replied;

Is there any place other then school, hospital, religious site, or government building that it is illegal?"

Your answer was bars and 51% places. So is that it? Are government building off limits? Are there other places off limits besides those? Are hospitals and "religious sites", whatever that means, off limits always?

Did you read the thread before you posted your inaccurate and incomplete answer?

I don't mean to chastise you, but there is enough bad and misleading information being spread around without us adding to it.

Obviously that's not all. Bars and 51% places were just an example. I did reference that he read the book, and that such questions were addressed.

Did you read the thread before you posted your inaccurate and incomplete answer? (this is what I meant by judgmental. Why do you do this?)
My answer is not inaccurate....I even referenced the code for him...
    Section 46.035 (b) (1)
As far as being incomplete, I thought it was obvious that I was referencing that section of code as JUST ONE EXAMPLE of "other places" that are off limits. That is what he asked, is it not? Did you read the post accurately?
If you choose to consider that incomplete, well, that's just you. You have referenced many sections of code many times, without posting the entire penal code, have you not?

I don't mean to chastise you, but there is enough bad and misleading information being spread around without us adding to it.
Then don't. I gave neither "bad" or "misleading" info.

txinvestigator...I don't profess to have your expertise in these matters, but you often fail to realize that not everyone comprehends, or retains, 100% of what is taught in class. That's why I suggested the OP read the book...over and over if necessary. Then, if they still have questions, ask away. I don't think the OP actually tried reading the book first, but that's par for the course.
And yes, you can be quite judgmental.

I think its sad that the OP came here and was pretty much told that its his fault that he got a "bad" instructor and no real help. He never came back after his second post thanks to the welcome he got. If you guys don't want to give advice, just don't write anything. Not everyone has been carrying for years or has been reading on the internet for weeks on end before their CHL class. It's ALOT of information to try and process and legaleze is difficult to get the grasp of for most people anyways. But because the first 2 responses to OP's first post were a little brash, he never even came back to TGT to see the rest of the answers, and a few of them were quite helpful. I'm not saying I disagree with you guys about the class/ instructor, but maybe it's just alot to try and cram in your head, and who really knows what they're looking at quality wise when they're trying to find their first chl instructor. The OP was doing the right thing by asking a question before he was in a situation where he would possibly be breaking the law. And I get it, it's all been covered ad nauseum...use the search function...blah, blah, blah. If you want someone to search, then don't say anything. They used their google search to find us, the least we can do is be polite. Just my 2 cents.

Sorry - but what I was trying to tell him is that asking something that important on the net is dangerous to his legal well-being. It's mind-boggling to me to ask folks you don't know about questions that could, if wrong, lead to felony charges. I wasn't trying to be ugly to him - I was, however, trying to get him directed to a source that would give him proper information that he KNEW he could rely on.
