I was the only person there with a long action gun in the group.

I learned. Long action << short action << carbines

I've never thought, "I want a longer, heavier gun for hunting" espially when walking through brush.

    Roger that!

That's why so many hunting rigs have pencil thin barrels. As long as you know your cold bore dope, make that first shot count.

If you get a biathlon sling, you could probably trek a bit easier/further.

Yah could never understand why people went crazy over the Heavy barrel thing. My new love for a brush, woods gun is a 16 inch 6.8 with a med weight barrel in a AR with a 4 power acog. A good sling helps to. I carry my gun like they do in the army to be hands free. really helps when using glass to spot.

A 16" carbine is great for inside 300 yds. Pistol cal carbines like lever actiond are awsome fun inside 100.
    To each his own.

That sounds like a superb woods/brush gun! Welcome to the forum!
