I didn't realize this was a popular activity. Seems like the vehicular equivalent of spitting in someone's face, or another form of bullying. This actually happened to me about 5 years ago, right here in this little town. I never thought it was intentional until I ran across this.

Rolling coal now illegal in New Jersey

Imagine a big ol' white Ford F250 next to me in my little white GMC Sonoma pulling away at a green light covered with black smoke. I guess it would have been kinda funny to see. It was rather rude though.

I've seen it a few times... can actually be dangerous in some situations. Those idiots should be heavily fined and their trucks impounded until that particular modification is removed.

Just hit 'em in the wallet, it'll make 'em cut it out.

    OR

After stopping someine that is caught doing it, drag their truck (put it on a wrecker, so they owner can't reprogram it on the way) to a state inspection station and have them do an emissions check on it. Betcha a nickle to a doughnut that they fail thr emissions inspection. Then tow the truck, and fine he pee-diddy out of the owner.

There is no emissions check done on older diesels other than does it have a muffler or cat, if equipped from the factory.

Not defending the practice of rolling coal, just saying the owners don't even need to reprogram anything for the annual safety inspection here in Texas.

    Fair enough.

It'd still knock a lot of them in the dirt, and how may guys that have their rig set up to really blow smoke do you think are running a cat and a muffler?

When I was in school, and over the years of working at dealerships, if an obnoxious prick got a diesel, these were the first to go. Absolutely illegal, and rarely enforced.

With the newer trucks, you have to play computer games to make it happen.

I just don't think we need more laws.....enforce the ones we have and it'll fade away.

    **** the EPA

Yeah, because a river that doesn't freeze or even slow down when it's 20 degrees below zero is perfectly friggin' normal/safe/nothing to worry about. Yeah, the EPA goes more than a bit overboard sometimes, but a blanket "**** them" attitude is, IMHO, retarded.

As for "rolling coal", I hate anyone and everyone that does it. A little bit of belching smoke coming off the line is alright, but rigging your exhaust system to put out a fucking 30 second plume of shit should get your precious truck impounded until you pay to have it fixed, or outright scrapped if you refuse. Granted I'm probably biased, since one of those assholes almost put me in the hospital when he decided to roll some coal in front of the bus stop.

My favorite part of the article was how they said it was already illegal to emit smoke for 3 seconds and violated federal laws, but they needed another law to ensure it gets enforced. Now it triple illegal, so problem solved.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, no matter how "retarded."

I can actually see the (convoluted) logic there, though. By making it a city/county/state offense, local LE can take care of it (ideally) then and there, instead of kicking it up the chain to the feds. It's not necessarily about making something "more illegal", it's about allowing LE lower down the food chain to take care of the problem.

Unless I'm missing something obvious here. Any current/former LE care to weigh in on the above?

The 3 second law was state. He referenced laws becoming furloughed and no longer enforced. I just hate seeing extra layers of laws just because someone wanted to push legislation. I equate it with gun laws... murder is illegal, but we need laws about guns before that in case someone wants to commit murder with a gun.
