To me a western needs a main character who lives by his own set of code, morals, and ethics. Lawlessness is a general rule of thumb. The true western focuses on the protagonist(s) as they struggle with themselves to decide what's right and wrong, or to follow what they believe is the right way. The '16 Magnificent Seven had very little character development. It had little to do with the original movies, and the only real memory I have of the new movie is the PC bullshit and feel-good resolutions among the different characters with different backgrounds.

The original Kung Fu is a western.

I'll join this discussion from a different perspective. As a Chicago native, I had absolutely no exposure to what you guys refer to as "Westerns" except for the Saturday afternoon Gene Autry, Hopalong Cassidy, Roy Rogers (and Dale Evans), Sky King flicks. All of the flicks that you mentioned are "Westerns" to me! I never sat on a horse, messed with cattle or sat on a tractor. It all looks like Western stuff from my point of view!
