Had the pleasure of hearing a 12" single mix of this shortly after it first came out. Legend has it that much of it was recorded as in the post above, some of it at a studio in S Louisiana where a few of the backing tracks were recorded. The studio used disc as a reference to check out the bottom end on their monitoring system. As good as it sounds on CD here, the difference is exactly as you indicated in your post above.However, if you've ever heard the 12" 45rpm single on a good sound system, this piece is amazing.
