Many of the players and both vocalists on this cut were former band mates, recording clients and good friends down through the years.
A product of unique times in the history of the Texas Singer/Songwriter, an era that came to the forefront of American folk music in the 70's and 80's.
Talk about a blast from the past! Use to see Shake Russell back in the late 70's and early 80's at a couple of clubs around town. Thanks for the memories.
Edited to add; Found a lot of Shake's music on Spotify.
Everyone should hear this at least once - probably not twice, so you who're old enough to have already appreciated 50-60s R&B - you are excused. For you younger folk who want to minimize your exposure to 50s-60s R&B, skip to about 2:00 to start listening. Bobby Marchan #31 on the Pop charts & #1 on the R&B charts in 1960. Listed in the Billboard book as "novelty", not "rhythm & blues".
Moving from pure R&B to more DooWop, there's one on YouTube that is a good example even though it was recorded in 1968. It's by the Fugs, the 4th cut on their 1968 album "Tenderness Junction". If you wanna hear it, you'll have to do the search 'cause I'm not going to post the link. NSFW.
Love it.
Good mix of Gypsy Jazz, Swing, Italian and with a touch of Klezmer ...
Love the register the clarinetist plays.
Got that Pete Fountain feel ...
