For those who may not be aware of it, Fox News channel has recently begun playing the National Anthem from 0358 to 0400 every morning. I am usually still up and I stand and salute.

I don't know that this qualifies as "political" but it was the closest topic to the subject I could find.

That's really cool to hear. You know you see in old TV shows and what not that kind of thing happening. I think of all movies Toy Story 2 has a scene where the TV is playing the National Anthem and then says "this concludes our broadcasting day" - I'm a youngin, but was that kind of stuff common earlier? I think it's awesome, but could you imagine the backlash you'd get now? Not to mention that TV channels don't have an end to their broadcast days, just once they stop getting most viewer watching they switch it over to infomercials on sex chat lines :( - good game America.

I remember 10+ years ago when they would run out of programming at 2-4AM and show an American flag, play the national anthem, and go to broadcasting only those color bars across the screen until it came back on in the morning. Don't have to be that old to remember that ;)

    Dallas Texas or so
It was common for stations to broadcast the national anthem as a sign off when going off the air for the night. Both local stations and networks did this in the 50s, 60s 70s and 80s. Being an old guy, I don't know about now as it is past my bedtime when they go off the air (if they even do) and besides I can't remember anything that new.

Yep, this was common for local broadcast stations and even some cable stations until the mid- to late 90's. Then the informercials came and that airtime became a valuable commodity.

I remember in Austin one station showed footage of the Thunderbirds in T-38s flying over the Grand Canyon while the anthem played. Then the test pattern from 3am to 5am.

When I was younger good ole Channel 9 would play "Proud to be an American". They were the only local TV station for a long time.
