    I remember that too. There was always the threat of being put on AD for 2 years. I don't remember that actually happening tho. And once the draft ended and it became an all volunteer Army, that option went away. After that, about all we could do is discharge them, usually a General Discharge after 3 months AWOL from drills or one AWOL from annual training. Once all the hippies from the 70's had served out their 6 years, the occurrences of AWOL went way down.
