That's a smoke detector that's a stand alone. It's not part of the security system. It can go off without the alarm company freaking out.

You have to pay a subscription for one. The alarm system has to be active, up and running.

Now, if you don't want that bill and you don't use the alarm system. You still have a smoke detector. Somebody probably stuck it there because the other one was there. Someone thought it was the best place.
