I have been doing an informal inquiry about how many magazines people purchase when they buy a new pistol? I usually get a total of 5 with the purchase of the new pistol, then pick up more as they go on sale.

    Gunz are icky.
I acquire a minimum of five starting out with a new firearm.
As time goes on I'll add a few more. Usually around 10 or so.
If its a high-cap or rare type I might get as many as 15 or 20.
They may be available today but tomorrow you can't buy one for love nor money.

I don't buy additional magazines at the time I purchase a new firearm. Most come with two. When I find some on sale I will buy more, usually an additional three. That's for handguns. I just kinda went crazy with the AR mags and ended up with about 40.

I regret not buying more than 3 for my S&W 1006 when Midway USA had them in stock. That was just 5 or 6 short years ago. I think they were $30 each. Now, if you can even find them, they are $80 to $100 a piece, used.

I generally don't buy extras unless I find a good deal on them.

That being said I also don't generally buy guns where magazine availability is a concern.

Not that I avoid firearms that use hard to find magazines intentionally, that's just how it seems to work out.

    There ya go.
Some extra mags stashed back isn't that big of a deal.
    Until it is.

Don't forget mags do wear out, get lost or damaged, etc.

Depends on the gun. I have around 20 for the HK91, at least 5 for each of my H&K pistols, a couple dozen 1911 mags, 5 for the P-320, and too many AR mags to count. Also have speed loaders and speed strips for the revolvers.
