These use to frighten me in the waters of the Bahamas. They can get as big as those whale sharks. After riding one, I used to hope to see more when I was diving.

An AFRES assigned A-10A serial number 77-0205, this one affectionately know as “Chopper Popper” was responsible for an air to air kill on an Iraqi helicopter on February 6th 1991.

Two A-10’s claimed air to air kills during the gulf war. The other being 81-0964 getting it’s kill against another helicopter on February 15th 1991. Note the nose art “Steal your face”. During this time A-10’s routinely had nose art applied.

The was also an attempt to make a version of the A-10 that was able to operate in all conditions. The A-10 N/AW (night/all weather) was a two seater one off version that was tested but never mass produced.

One typical load out for a gulf war mission, 2 IR guided maverick air to ground missiles, 4 MK.82 500 pound dumb iron bombs, 2 sidewinder Air to air missiles and an ALQ-119 ECM pod.

One more load out for that time period. This time instead of dumb iron bombs it carries 4 MK.20 rockeye cluster munitions and 4 maverick missiles.
