I thought I’d throw this out here in case anyone else runs into wanting to mount a modern scope to a pre-war 70 that hasn’t had the rear bridge drilled/tapped and doesn’t want to ruin collector value.
I’ve tampered with various stith mount based ideas but most are built for one specific type of scope.
I found just the rear component of a stith side mount for a bear cub scope for $20 to use as the rear mounting point.
(Bear in mind, pre-war 70 only has two holes in the receiver front ring and two holes in the left rear for a peep style sight)
I didn’t get any pictures of it before I started to work on it, sorry.
Anyhow.
I found that a new Leupold backcountry one piece base had enough meat left in the rear to drill and tap into through the scalped stith mount utilizing original holes.
Pics are better at describing what occurred.
Basically 4.5 hrs of cut, file, grind, buff, drill and tap, add 3/4” 6-48 screws and now I can mount a modern scope without damaging the rifles original configuration.
