Never ran into the problem in a FTF deal, always knew the other person except in one non FTF and that one turned out great to both parties. Sure, theres persons I would never sell, trade or buy from but that is a horse of a different color.

Let me let you guys in on a little story:

Back when the ATF was shutting down the Austin gun show they arrested a guy for "selling to a known illegal alien". This seller had asked the so-called "illegal alien" for identification and a Texas DL was produced. He then made the transaction, and was subsequently arrested and drug out of the Austin gun show, literally. It was a private gun sale from a private collection at a public gun show. He is now in the legal system trying to defend himself.

So a little cover your ass is in order from my perspective, especially knowing that story above. The degree of that depends on several factors, most of which is how well do I know this individual and is their any possibility that they might be excluded from the gun sale by any shape and form (prison tats, accents, etc.)
Um, a TXDL demonstrates residency, that satisfies the law as far as I know as far as the seller is concerned.

Isn't the key here "good faith" ? If you make a resposnsible attempt to follow the law, when selling, then you can't be held accountable legally for what a bad guy does.

Law enforcement aside, the ordinary Joe would probably not be able to spot a fake I.D.. If it looks strongly like your D.L., what do you do?

Personally, if the buyer won't pony up a copy of the D.L. to be placed with a Bill of Sale, I don't sell. I also have them sign the bill of sale. Not a problem to date.

Seems like some are missing a point. People will create false or fake DL using real numbers and names whenever possible to get past any unknowing or unsuspecting private person or business that will take a check with DL ID. they are not given to banks or Cops during traffic stops unless the person is hoping to run while the info is being checked out.

Should they have your information and provide it during a transaction that results in a bad check you are the one the cops will contact, you will be the one who has to satisfy them as to your innocence. I doubt they are not going to take your word for it at the moment the come into contact with you. So, regardless of where you are or what you are doing expect to be escorted by a couple guys in uniform and then spend a goodly portion of your day or days proving your innocence. I doubt very much they would be in a hurry to get the person who complained down to clear you and I doubt that person, thinking the dirt bag was behind bars would hurry down to let you out.

I am quite willing to show a DL, willing to sign a bill of sale and include my address and phone number. As most trades I have done involved phone calls and emails between buyer and seller over a period of days it should be easy to contact me if required in the future and the addition of my DL info would not assist this in any way.

IMO having a working phone number and email address included on your bill of sale are more valuable than a DL for your ongoing protection as they are traceable back. I doubt a dirt bag would have someones phone or email address for more than a day before it stopped working. All I am required to do is be reasonably certain that the person was not prohibited from owning, selling or purchasing from me and it would be indicated in the bill of sale that they signed. The addition of my or their DL information does not make that any more safe, secure or true.

It would however leave me vulnerable to dirt bags and they are everywhere it seems these days. So, if you are not satisfied with the chats and emails, not satisfied with the bill of sale info and a look at the DL. I guess you will sell to someone else. I don't know how you will store or safeguard my information, nor am I willing to find out you were robbed a few days/weeks/years later and the info is now out there possibly being used by more than one person and leaving me to fend off the accusations on my own dime. I just don't like you or trust you that much.

You want my DL number to sell me a gun, I want you to produce the original bill of sale where you bought the gun so I know you are not selling me a stolen gun. You cannot prove the gun is not stolen we don't do the deal.
