Teenager: "Dad, can you take me to Leslie's? Erica's coming over too, so it will be AWESOME!!!"
    Me: (sigh...)
Teenager: "So can you take me to Leslie's?"
    Me: (longer sigh...)

    Arrive at Leslie's

    Me: "Have a good time..."
Teenager: "Erica's not answering her phone"
    Me: "So? Try later then"
Teenager: "Leslie's not answering either and I have to let her know I'm here"
    Me: (speechless for a moment...)
Me: "Why don't you let Leslie know you're here by ringing the $#%^$% doorbell?!"
Teenager: "Okay, bye Dad... Luv ya!"

I shit you not, this actually happened.

I watched in disbelief while my neighbor's kids talked to each other by text message while sitting next to each other in the back seat of their car.

We are creating a village of blithering idiots.

Opsec. They operate on a different level of security than we did. You and everyone else can hear talking. Texting is more secure and it's in code so likely te be better understood. Calling before going to someone's house is polite. Why ring a doorbell and bother the whole household when you can call and not disturbe the parents? It's a different way of thinking, communicating and problem solving and it's faster and more precise. Like turning a key and "driving" a car vs catching, then hitching a horse to a wagon and then driving it to town.

We are old timey Guys and we better start stepping up or we are going to get left behind.

Actually, I agree with the doorbell thing. I like to call and tell someone that I'm just arriving (around the corner or just pulling up to the house). That way if they're not ready, they can tell me so I can avoid standing on the front step while they're in the bathroom or something...

I still vote for a village of blithering idiots.

The communication skills of those under 30 is suffering like never before. Forget people skills. Forget finding one that wants a job that doesn't include spending all day on Facebook and their phone.

Have you guys tried to hire anybody lately?

The whole thing reminded me of the urban legend about the woman who thought she was locked out of her car and needed help because the remote didn't work.

I hate phones all together. If I had a time machine I would travel back in time and kick Alexander graham bell in the nuts.

I say bring back the pony express. Most people these days don't even know how to write a letter anymore, I was looking for some stamps the other day and my little 13 year old cousin asked me what a stamp was and what it was used for. I shook my head in disappointment and explained.

The boy rolled up into our drive-way, having made a date with my younger sis.

Boy did not have the guts to get out of the car and ring the door bell.

Honked his Ford Pinto car horn over and over.

My father walked out the front door and down the drive-way.

Pulled the punk from his car, stood back, looked at him and said: "You are a sorry excuse for a human being. Take a shower, get a hair cut, put on a shirt, get some shoes, snuff out that joint, and don't ever let me see you around here again!"

    Never saw that boy again.

Nowadays, OWS is a contemporary reflection of that 1970's loser.

    Be well.

Yeah, that was just rude. You have to have some manners, damn it.

As for the OWS folks... Watch and learn.

As we evolve as a society the way we communicate is going to change there is no way around that. You have to admit that we've came a hell of a long way from the smoke signal or even the letter though a postal carrier. How many people do you think thought sending a letter was crazy or idiotic when you could just go see the person face to face and talk to them sometime? Things are going to change in the way our society operates and talks to each other over time. You don't have to like it but it's going to happen.

In a few seconds I have have a text message punched up on my iphone and have it zapped around the world to someone on the other side of the planet in the time it takes to pour a glass of jack and coke. All that from a device that fits in the palm of my hand.

We see fight against change everywhere. Recently the Marine Corps changed uniform policy requiring sleeves down year round instead of up during the summer and down during the winter. Around the same time they slashed tuition assistance benefits in half for Marines. Guess which one gets more attention? Sleeves down......it actually made front page on the Marine Corps times and it's all you hear about at work now days.

You used a derogatory term in the title and a wirty dord talking to your bambino. You should expect contact from CPS come Monday. :*

matefrio: They can't knock on the door - it has no keypad. Communication skills & vocabulary are indeed going downhill. However it's not limited to teens.

jeepinbanditrider: You make some good points but there's no excuse for some of the uses phones get these days.

    General response:
The parents are shuffling their kids to and from friends houses, the kid doesn't need to 'call' from the curb to say they've arrived. The receiving parents should be aware of what's going on and a ring of the door bell should be expected, not a disturbance.
