I didn't read the article, just assumed was about squirrels.

also two legged 'squirrels' and other animals. maybe not applicable to your situation, but I know more than one gardener with an outdoor dog to watch over theirs. don't recall them catching any tree rats but did catch a couple of bunnies. and one in Katy that planted a couple bitter orange trees adjacent to his fence to discourage five finger discounters along the street side of his garden. just fyi as usual.

These are actual used in many parts of Africa to protect against elephants raiding gardens. Plenty of them to be found, not everyone digging them up is successful. Some detonate while transporting them.
