    I've always thought it was odd that you couldn't carry in national parks. If I recall you don't only have to worry about the possibility of coming across a dangerous animal (like running into a puma, it happened to me Redwood national park in California) but there have been incidents where serial killers have made habit of praying on campers. Being attacked by some crazed serial killer is unlikely, but dangerous animals are a common thing in some areas.
