I had a similar experience with a 12 inch garter snake.
Mrs Whistler saw some story about a snake in a toilet, kept waking me at night turning on the lights. Took me forever to make her understand this happens in places where they have open sewer systems snakes can infiltrate. Unless they climb up on the roof and drop down a vent there isn't really any place for a snake to enter my septic system.
Both, it's more common than you think. When I go to my 50 person group session, everyone asks, Do you want to see my snake?Being in the toilet, or it bit you?
