If I shoot an old acetylene tank that still has a little gas in it with a .50 bmg rifle and it makes a big explosion, am I violating some kind of ATF bomb making rule?

    Doubt it.

How much gas? The only explosion you're likely to get is the gas escaping the tank. Acetylene can't burn by itself; like any other fuel you need oxygen. Plus, most bullets won't ignite stuff.

Only thing I'd be worried about is the tank going rocket and coming back at me out of anger.
