ROBSTOWN - A Robstown soldier, who faked his kidnapping back in July, has been sentenced to three years confinement and dishonorable discharge.
Private James Gonzalez received his sentence after he pleaded guilty to desertion, making a false statement and obstruction of justice. Gonzalez entered the plea during his court martial in Fort Hood.
On July 13, the FBI told Gonzalez's family that the army had received a ransom call saying the private had been kidnapped. The caller demanded $100,000 and the withdrawal of U.S. Troops from the border.
Gonzalez was arrested in Laredo nine days later and he admitted it was all a hoax.

The United States Armed Forces takes it's recruit's enlistment contract with them very seriously. AWOL less than 30 days, court martial but survivable. Over 30 days and considering it is wartime, about as serious as can be imagined. On the other hand due to the shortage of cannon fodder and no selective service (draft) enlistments have and are sometimes extended for personnel. But an all volunteer military isn't large enough to fight big, nor extended wars. And bringing back the draft would be suicide for politicians....So ?
