I have built a tack driver and need a recommendation for what power scope to upgrade to. I have a 3x9-50 on it now. I can see the target great at 50 yds. but I would like to see the target better at 100yds. I am able to hold a 4 inch group at 100yds with my current scope but I know it can be better. Any suggestions under $400.00.

4" group at 100 yards isn't the scope, it's more than likely the ammo. At around 75 yards most ammo goes sub-sonic and that disturbs the bullet. That's why they shoot good at 25, 50, and sometimes 75, but go to crap at 100 yards. Get some Wolf Match and try it through your gun. From my experience most ammo will do about a 4 - 5" group at 100 yards, but Wolf Match will hold about 1" on average.

    Ditto what Texas1911 stated.

If all you want to do is look at tiny holes down range at 100 yards look for something with a magnification of at least 20x

If you plan to shoot at dusk or overcast look at a bell diameter of 50x for anything over 24x magnification.

With a 22lr you need a focus or an adjustable objective.

You'll want details to "pop" out so the best glass available. Clarity is better than magnification.

Thanks matefrio. That is the info I was looking for. My objective is to look at tiny holes down range with clarity. With that being said, can anyone reccomend a scope? By the way, my gun is a stock ruger target model and it shoots very accurate right out of the box.

If you were doing something like competitive silhouette with your 22, you'd want a good scope with repeatable windage/elevation adjustments that are exact. Possibly better eye relief, etc. If you are just target shooting from a bench, why spend all that money? I got a cheap (like $99) Simmons 6-24x42 scope. I'd recommend it but they dropped it from the line. You have to re-zero anytime you adjust it, but I don't adjust it much. I also like the mil dot reticule because you can have the rifle dialed in at a certain distance and if you want to shoot for groups, you can aim with a dot and you don't destroy your point of aim. Also, at 100 yards, if I switch ammo from high velocity to standard it shifts the point of aim 1 dot.

So if you want to spend more money, go for it, but I think even something like this will meet your needs:

I have a BSA Sweet .22 on my Marlin 60 and the gf's 795. I think they are pretty awesome for the money. The adjustable objective really helps. I pretty much never shoot it past 100yards, tho.

I guess the real question is, "How much do you want to spend"?

I have a Mueller MPV on my favorite 10/22. It has 4.5-14x magnification w/objective lens adjustment as well. It's a great scope for under a buck fifty. The clarity is excellent up to about 200 yards. Beyond that, it does get difficult to spot those tiny 22 holes. Here's a few pics of it on the rifle.

+1 on the Tasco Varmint... it let's me shoot less than 2" at 200yds with a 6mm. Tasco also has a 10x fixed with AO that's not bad. My latest purchase is a Nikon ProStaff 2x7 and I like it a lot. It will live on a 22 WMR.

This. I do not have one, but have shot with one. I currently have a tasco word class 4.5-16 with ao. The muellers are sweet for 22s.

I have a Mueller on my 17hmr with the same magnification and its awesome out to 100 yards.

Also one to check out would be the new scope that Nikon has out specifically for the 22lr. I don't know the model but I ready about it in a magazine or online and it was supposed to be really nice for the .22, so much so that I thought about buying one to replace the Bushnell that is on mty 10/22 now.

I just ordered a centerpoint 4-16x40mm, haven't recieved it yet but it had some decent reviews, hopefully it will work out well. It was about $70 with tax and shipping.

Got the scope sighted in today (almost anyhow). The first few shots weren't even on paper and there wasn't enough adjustment to get it on paper. I used millet scope rings and had to re-mount (adjust) the mounting, anyhow it's shooting about 1 inch groups at forty yards. Had to stop playing and get back to work so I'll fine tune it later. Really like not having to go look at the target--just look thru scope.
