I was taking some pictures and the wind blew over my camera on the tripod. I was greeted with a number of cracks on what appeared to be the lens, but then I remembered that I always run UV filters on my equipment. Sure enough, it took the brunt of the fall and possibly saved my lens.

You were lucky! Usually when that happens the threads get dented and you cannot unscrew the filter anymore.

It wasn't coming off easy ... but I made it happen. My grip can choke out small animals.

When I used 35 MM cameras, I always used "Skylight" filters to protect the lens. It's like your UV filters but basic glass. It's real cheap insurance!
