I don't see how the fat slob is a porn star ...
In the 1970s and earlier there was a New York production hub for porn. It no longer exists. However, when it was active it made extensive use of on-screen talent from a particular ethnic group. Guys that looked a bit like Ron were common in porn. Also, Ron wasn't fat back then. So, his successful entry into the business is not surprising.

What is surprising is his longevity. Since Ron entered the business, NY productions have all closed and male fashion shifted to So-Cal pretty boys and others that most assuredly didn't look like Ron. Ron got fat and remained that way while the industry shifted to the 3%-body-fat body builder types. He continued to be employed during the rise of the tatted-up "Look, I just got out of prison yesterday!" style of male talent. Through it all, Ron remained and even flourished.

    Why?

He has a good work ethic, a decent sense of humor, is a talented self-promoter, once maintained the holy grail of contact books in the industry and, in the early days, was sufficiently flexible and endowed that he was able to perform certain acts that once seen cannot be un-seen. On the business side, he conducts himself professionally and has had a key role in arranging financing for many, many films; his profitable involvements in the industry are quite diverse.

Beyond that, he's simply been persistent. He's been willing to stay in the industry longer than most rather than getting high, burning out, and wandering away.

There are legitimate reasons that he's a legend in the industry.

On a personal note, if you ever get a chance to hang out with him, do it. It's hard to say who is being wing man for whom but it all boils down to this: just being around the guy and picking up on his rejects was more fun than I could have *ever* managed on my own.
