My girl's brothers want me to go hunting with them.

I've never been a hunter myself but it DOES interest me so I've been looking at various hunting rifles to hunt deer and hog. I tend to like German firearms so I've been looking at Steyr as a go-to brand for a hunting rifle in the .308 variety and I'm thinking about picking up one of these Steyr SSG 69 rifles.

Does anyone have this rifle? What are your thoughts on it?

Steyr builds a great platform, but honestly if you are hunting you don't exactly need a tack driver.

I still want to shoot a hog with a .50 BMG frangible.

The SSg69 is an awesome gun. As much as I'd want one, I do have to say that for the price or significantly less you could have a perfectly good gun that is still more accurate than most shooters, and with good glass. Something like a Tikka T3 Lite for ~$500, Leupold VXIII for another ~$450 and you have a 1" to sub 1" gun at 100yds.

I wouldn't spend anywhere near that much on a hunting rifle... There are so many options out there, I don't even know what specifically to tell you. You just don't need to spend $2000 on a rifle alone to have a good hunting rifle. If I was looking at a hunting rifle, I'd personally be considering something like a Remington 700, CZ 550, Tikka T3... Something along those lines.

Oh, and Steyr isn't German, it's Austrian.
