How many licks DOES it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?

A group of engineering students from Purdue University reported that its licking machine, modeled after a human tongue, took an average of 364 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. Twenty of the group's volunteers assumed the licking challenge-unassisted by machinery-and averaged 252 licks each to the center.

    The work "amuck".
We all know what it means. To run about acting crazy.
The word originates from Sotheast Asia, mainly the Philippine Islands.
In the aftermath of the Spanish-American war the U.S. took over the Philippine Islands.
On several islands there dwelled tribes of baddies known as Moros. Muslim Baddies.
    These guys were tough.
They ran around the jungle with big sharp knives called a Kris. They would Hassan Chop your ass in a second.
When U.S. troops tried to pacify the area they ran into these fellows. The Spanish never did manage to subdue them. Basically the Spanish just left them alone.
Prior to a battle these Moro warriors would do the psych themselves into battle mode thing. They would drink some jungle juice, listen to some Die in battle is the way to heaven talk, and generally work themselves into a murderous rage known as The Amok.
The Amok was sort of a mix of depression, rage, hate, anger, with a manic need to chop a mo fo's head off with a Kris. They then charged off into battle.
U.S. troops got to meet these hopped up insane fellows very shortly after.
They learned the Amok was a sunnybeach and it has since passed down to us.

and this leads to an interesting 9mm vs. 45 discussion in the next post.

During the late 1880's/early 1890's the U.S. military adopted a new handgun. The D/A .38 revolver took over from the good old .45Colt SAA.
This thing was a dog of a caliber. Weak. Low-powered. Essentially a slow moving roundnose lead bullet of approx. 9mm caliber.
It was(and remains) a pretty much useless fighting handgun round.
When U.S. troops took over in the Philippines from the Spanish they ran into the Moro.
As stated in the previous post these guys would get juiced up and come a charging into the troopers and go to chopping away with a big sword. Troopers would shoot these guys with their .38's. Often numerous times and it wouldn't stop the charging Moro. Many troopers got the final chop before the Moro was finally put down.
A call went out for a more effective handgun.
The good old .45Colt SAA came out of storage and went on a tropical vacation.
The old Frontier era .45Colt SAA was a horse stopper. You didn't need to shoot the indian so much as you needed to shoot his horse so you could catch him. And then kill him.
Well, a Moro ain't exactly a horse but he took some heavy lead to put down.
    The .45Colt worked pretty well.
An effective caliber but the old SAA was slow to reload and the blackpowder cartridges were not well suited to wet tropical conditions.
The call went out for a mo' betta handgun and some guy named Browning invented one around 1911.

Way back in the 1910's there were US troops shooting Muslim baddies with 9mm and not having a lot of success with it so they went back to a .45cal.
Today we have US troops shooting Muslim baddies with 9mm and not having a lot of success so they...……..

♪ If you're listening to "Lola" by the Kinks, the 45 version says that the champagne "tastes just like cherry cola" and the US-imported album version says it "tastes just like Coca cola". BBC made them remove reference to a brand name in the version (British 45) played on BBC radio.
