It's my understanding that jersey barriers, the kind that bell at the bottom, are meant to lift the vehicle but dump it back down after redirecting it forward. Decades ago I fell asleep behind the wheel of a car with the cruise control set at 70 and drove into a jersey barrier. It worked exactly like that; it lifted the front of the car and dumped me back on the shoulder pointing in a more correct direction.

All that assumes a fairly narrow angle of attack, though. That truck looked like it was hitting the barrier at a not-so-acute angle.

Sad and sobering to see, for sure.
Did you wake up after that?

Highway 75 DFW. no sharp corners, no dramatic elevation changes, no obstructions, no cross traffic, long acceleration ramps, well-marked lanes for off ramps, modern clear signage. On a clear day, sun high in the sky, dry pavement. No evidence of equipment failure. NO EXCUSE for anyone to die.

Texting. If you believe the numbers gathered by the NHTSB, and the IIHS its texting.
Texting passed by DWI and DUI combined for fatality accidents, several years ago.

The prisons don't have enough room for those texting while driving.

Not to mention - if everyone who texted & drove went to prison, within a week, you'd have no police to round up all the other ne'er-do-wells. Between texting, talking on their phones, messing with the MDT, and the other thousand things they're doing besides driving - its a wonder police aren't crashing a lot more than they do now.

"Bancroft and Sons Transportation has generously offered to pay for his funeral. " Generously. How big of them.

Well, they didn't have to. Whatever happened on that road, it probably wasn't his employer's fault. Considering that funeral expenses could easily be over $10,000 I'd say "generous" is not misapplied here.

When Mom passed in 2018, a bare bones funeral ran $13K and she already owned the plot. Can’t get in the building for less than $5K.

My dad's funeral was $11,000 and the plot was already arranged in a family cemetery. We went as economical as possible, too. I understand cremation can knock a couple thousand off, but it's still not easily affordable.

There are cremations for $3k.

Wished I had done that for Kat. A buddy had his wife’s ashes made into stones. Gave his kids one. I would love to do that.

Cremation for $1k in 2020 (Hospice knew the place). Memorial at our house (early Covid so not many other options anyways).

It can be done relatively cheap and my family is instructed to do the same for me. You don't need the funeral home at all.

Prayers for his family.

When the FIL passed, the MIL (hippie communist libtard) had him cremated at an overly expensive "green" place. They were spewing propaganda bullsh*t like "no fossil fuels" and "green power only" and such. I went around the back of the building and they had standard utility hookups with normal electric meter and gas meter. But hey, if customers are stupid enough to fall for the propaganda and shell out lots of commie dollars, why not? Taking money from stupid hippies seems to be pretty easy with this "green" business model. :D

OK, so prison for 'texters who drive' and put everyone on the road at risk of death/maiming - including you, me and a whole helluva lot moms and kids because some s-hit doesn't care, he's just gotta 'text', but there's no 'room at the inn, i.e. prison..should be 'caned' like they do in some countries...50 lashes...minimum.

I saw a video of this being done - it was 50 lashes and it was an awful thing to witness, but I think if the texting while driving s-heads knew this might their fate if caught, it might just slow down this type of menace...

If not 'caning' then something severe as punishment - first step, kill their phone/phones, make them watch as it's stomped to death, then march there asses to the caning place...

Now, get off my lawn!

I imagine it was. I seem to remember reading somewhere that in some jurisdictions when a large number of lashes is the sentence, they're not all administered at once, e.g. you get 10, then a couple of months to heal, then you report back to get your next 10. Fail to show up for your next round and the punishment become much more severe.

I can't find the article now so the paragraph above is as reliable as my memory, i.e. not very.

Depends. My sister signed up with Baylor College of Medicine to donate her body. She doesn't intend for that to happen; she just wants me to have the option. This was a long time ago and things may have changed but when she signed up, the default was that you got back no remains. You could pay $200 and get some cremains sent to you approximately a year after the death of your loved one.

Anybody know what it's like now?

I read an autobiography of a British SAS soldier who get in a bar fight in Singapore in the 70s - messed his opponents up pretty bad, and wound up being sentenced to caning. Being a big tough SAS trooper he figured he could stand up to a few whacks with a stick - no big deal, right? He said the guy with the bamboo cane was skilled enough with it he hit the exact same spot every time. After the third or fourth hit, it broke the skin. Every hit after that splashed blood onto the walls that the trooper could see, although he was too distracted with biting down on the dowel they put in his mouth and trying to school enough self control not to scream - as he refused to give them the satisfaction. He walked out under his own power, but spent a couple of weeks in a hospital bed recovering.
