Things that went BUMP in the night

It's roughly 2 am a couple of nights ago (before IKE) , I finally start to fall asleep (suffer from insomnia) suddenly I hear this loud CRASH, sounded as if someone was coming through the ceiling or a window. WTF! in the dark I slip on my shoes grab my vertec and go to investigate. Since the activity seemed to come from the front of the house, I sneak outside from the back door. Just as make it out, another loud CRASH. I carefully and silently make it to the front... Nothing and Nobody, I secure the perimeter of the house.. same. I find a hiding place and wait.... 30 min.... 1 hour.
Finally I decide to go back in and check things out in the morning.

Keep in mind, I just moved to this house and I'm not familiar with the "noises" that are normal, living alone since my daughter went off to college gave me the knowledge that I was indeed alone and not a family member.

Next morning.... I find tree branches in my front yard, Apparently since I have so many, and it rained a little, they got heavy and fell on my metal roof!!

Funny story... Needless to say I've added that as a normal "bump" in the night.

Man, I'm glad that's all it was. That's the one thing I hate about moving into a new place is getting used to all the normal squeaks and rattles. I tend to lose sleep for a few nights. Glad you're ok.

I live in secluded small town (if you can call it that) called Shady Shores right next to lake Lewisville. I chose the location because I do enjoy being away from the hustle-n-bustle, plus there is hardly anyone to bug me.
Living close to the water, I find all sorts of critters in my backyard like rabbits, opossums and sometimes raccoons. The only thing worked against me is that the house is surrounded by trees, in a way it's great because of the shade but I had to give up my satellite dish because no clear view.

This incident was actually quite educational, made me realize how fast I can snap into combat/defense mode without much thought and doing it in the dark.

Like I said, I found it quite educational. I was able to secure the whole perimeter of the house in the dark without waking up my neighbors yapping dog, (darn thing barks at just about anything) and found a good place for observation. Of course it was slightly sprinkling and I was outside in a T-shirt, boxers and sneakers. After an hour was soaked.

Near July 4th, I heard a series of pops that sounded very much like a typical pistol cadence, and much unlike fire crackers down the street. I was home alone, so I wondered out the door and had a good look around. No police showed up and no one seemed to be running off after about 20 minutes, but I was juiced up.

lol The neighbors probably had their pup on silent mode and watched 'the goofy new guy next door' play Delta Force in middle of the night in his yard in his skivvies

Glad the noise wasn't more than the 'normal' sounds of the place. That'd be a real BP raiser to find out you're already target of a burglary.

This dog looks like mini border collie... the darn thing barks at just about anything. I was very surprised it wasn't barking it's head off. I heard during the second CRASH as I slipped out the back door. But at the time, the dumb dog was the least on my mind.
I must admit, if someone saw me they would have called the cops and in retrospect I find it quite humorous.

The frickin' branches were quite large dead limbs soaked with rain water.

Gotta love new houses.

When I was in college the small town it was in had three guys who pretty muched owned most the rental properties that the students could afford. I had just moved into a duplex near one of the only 5 bars in town. I settled in for the evening, was just dozing off when I hear someone screwing around with the front door. I get up with the flashlight and start walking over towards my 12 gauge leaning against the wall when the front door bangs open and the lights pop on.

I grabbed the 12 gauge and worked the slide and started to bring it up when I see the guy coming into the living room as I'm looking into it. Tuns out its a guy from the school who used to rent the place. I actually had picked up the lease after he had moved into another place. He was coming home drunk from the bar behind the house, forgot he didn't live there, but had a spare key he remembered stashed someplace in the front yard.

Needless to say we both about crapped our shorts. Once we got over the initial pucker moment he apologized profusely and left. Next morning I swapped out the locks on my own dime and billed the landlord. Ever since whenever I move into some place new, first thing I do is change the locks or barring that, install some other mechanism to make sure that doesn't happen again.
