Anyone used one? Likes/dislikes? I've heard a lot of talk from folks that swear by 'em, and it's an appealing idea - but just wondering if there's any "down side" to 'em....

    Input anyone?

I will stick with my tumbler for most brass cleaning, but they're great for small parts and really badly tarnished brass. It takes more time and attention to process large quantities of brass. I don't see much of a downside for having one; only that you've got to get cleaning solutions and do a little more prep.

They're great for cleaning bolt assy's and any small parts with cosmo on them if you're a cruffler.

What about slides/barrels for handguns - heck even the frames for that matter? Any detriment to paint/finishes?

If your finish is worn/flaked/scratched, then I'd be a little cautious. I've done Park'd and Duracoat finishes with no problem.
As long as you've got a large enough volume for what you're trying to clean, ultrasonics can clean just about anything. They work wonders on barrels.
